From there, it was hello to Kathryn the nurse and Meghan the technician and ER bed 28. Dr. Kyle stopped by and listened to Sigrid's heartbeat and get a sense of what was wrong while Sandra from Admitting explained cash, charge and check were all the items on the menu.
Maya from Poland nailed Sigrid's name better than anyone in this country in the nearly twenty year we've lived here-she did so well I almost forgot the circumstances in which she got to show off her skill-almost. Peter was with Maya and he was pushing the portable X-ray machine. The longer the afternoon went on the more things I saw him push up and down the hallway, but never his luck.
The Big Wheel Stryker bed has a variety of positions depicted on the side of the frame and the patients are encouraged to try none of them, unless Kathryn or Meghan adjusts it for them. And the only thing they were adjusting for the next hour or so after taking lots of blood was the heart monitor which kept losing Sigrid's heartbeat for reasons that seemed unnerving to us, but we were (we hoped) just passing through.
At ten after three, we went out through the outdoors and stopped at the pharmacy to fill a prescription from Dr. Kyle and headed home. I remembered before we'd made a decision to hit the ER we had been concerned at the darkening skies and the likelihood of rain. Seemed to be very important at the time. Almost.
