So Where's the Gecko

If Autumn and Winter could be like the weekend we just had here in Southeastern Connecticut, you would never hear a word of complaint from me (and just because I would whisper very softly (mainly because I can't)).

We had beautiful blue skies with some scattered clouds and a light breeze and temperatures in the low to mid-Seventies. Yes, the leaves are changing and I am a little sad about that but the colors are so brilliant I can't help but enjoy them.

Ah, this is the life I said as I walked down our Broadway in Norwich Connecticut, past the Cafe Otis (open on Sundays) and Craftsman Cliff Roasters (Matt has earned his day of rest), passing the Monocle and the Wauregan and crossing at the intersection with the Shannon Building and then hanging the left up Franklin Street enjoying my reflection in the windows (since few others would) of Apollo Cycle and Foundry 66 heading back up the hill to home past Chelsea Parade.

And the most amazing part, suggesting to me I might be living in a staged reality....while walking down Broadway just ahead of the Cathedral of Saint Patrick, a shirt-sleeved/blue-jeaned guy with a backward Dallas Cowboys ballcap riding an ice blue Harley Davidson rumbled by on his way to who-knows-where, looking for adventure and blaring from his radio I assume located somewhere between the handlebars was David Coverdale and Whitesnake. All that was missing was the block lettering as the street faded to black.

Money Doesn't Talk

I came across this graphic somewhere while wandering around on the social media Serengeti a while back and wondered about it.

And then because sometimes life imitates art, I came across this story.

There's no one alive who can't be purchased or enticed there's no one alive who won't sell for a price. Money Talks.

Worth a Second Look

I wrote what follows a decade ago (I know, 'you've been throwing letters out into the ether for a decade?' Actually for LONGER than that.) and it seems life is more cyclic than I first thought, even the second time. Back in the day, I called it:

Whistles the Wind

I only have one of their albums, and technically (of course) it's not an album, it's a CD but I'm such a fossil I still package music in obsolete units of measure because it's inconceivable to me that you might ever consider buying it like hamburger, but, rather than by the pound, by the download.

I came from an era where people my age showed their devotion to music and musicians by naming their children, 'Dylan' and such. And the generation that followed us name theirs for fruits and vegetables (shoe's a little tight, Gwyneth?)

The band is Flogging Molly and aside from the same biology that places us in the same genus and species, I have little in common with anyone within the band. They are considered an Irish and/or Celtic Band which helps build the box we can put the label on, to help us not think about what an artist is or what they do-instead we can say 'do you like So-and-So?'

And depending on the answer, we can then say, 'you really should try this guy/these people/that ringtone; it'll remind you so much of So-and-So.' One of those all 'ducks are birds but not all birds are ducks' if we can't be profound, let's be profane moments we cherish so much.

"Well, it breaks my heart to see you this way.
The beauty in life, where's it gone?
And somebody told me, you were doing okay.
Somehow, I guess they were wrong."

Perhaps they're singing about a past lover, and I've listened to this song maybe three hundred (or is it three hundred thousand?) times in five years but never really heard it until late yesterday driving on Water Street through what was downtown Norwich,
but I think that they're singing about where I live.

Jail to the Cheat

Looks like it's the season for treason in that sleepy, little town with delusions of international grandeur on the banks of the Potomac River, as the Liar-in-Chief may have finally written a check with his big mouth that his large, orange ass cannot cash. In my opinion, it could not have happened to a more deserving guy.

My biggest problem with the Trump Lies is how the servile and supine swamp rats of the Republican Party contort themselves to always support him even as he commits treason against the country they, too, claim to serve. Good thing Lincoln died "in the old days, right?"

It's not time that Trump go. It is PAST time that Trump go. Preferably in the back seat of a Secret Service police cruiser with little, tiny handcuffs on his itty-bitty hands, so tight he can't wave goodbye to anyone. If it counts, I'll be waving to him albeit using only one finger of the hand.

Gimmee An E and Make It a Big One

We went to The Eastern States Exposition, a/k/a The Big E, sort of like a state fair but for all the New England States yesterday in Agawam, Massachusetts, along with what always feels like most of the nation's population east of the Mississippi River.

A blast from the past
I was so looking forward to having a deep-fried Fiat 500 cabriolet, smothered in tater tot crumbs but it turns out that delicacy doesn't exist. Yet. But just about everything else you might ever imagine that could be deep-fried (and a couple of things you'd never, ever imagine) were available. They were delicious. Trust me on that.

Me and my Honey yesterday in The Big Chair
I took a million pictures as I always do but I'm not posting them because as is so often the case when I look again at pictures that I've taken I don't like them nearly as much as I did when I snapped. It seems my good judgment deserts me in the heat of the moment only to return when the hullaballoo has quieted. Like so much else in life, I guess.

One Voice, Many Choices

There's a lot more in helping run a city the size and complexity of Norwich than just possessing a desire to help (which I hope we all assume every candidate for office this November has). With so many different people in the same device, creating and managing a consensus to the benefit of the greatest number of residents is both a science and an art (and also involves more than a bit of magic as well as some luck).

We each have two ears and one mouth and my mom used to say the world tends to work better when we use them in that proportion. Especially at election time when the choices we make in the here and now create ripples and echoes that can and often do affect us for years to come. Nobody or political party has a monopoly on good ideas and we should use every opportunity to sample fresh insights and differing points of view.

We devote more time in deciding what we're having for lunch than in defining what we expect from the institutions and leadership our taxes and talent have created for our own benefit. We invest more time reading the comics or the sports scores in the local paper than in learning about the issues confronting and challenging our community and understanding how they impact each of us (and what we can do about that impact).

I attended a presentation last Friday by the Greater Norwich Area Chamber of Commerce, "The State of the City," highlighting both the progress and challenges of our city government, our public schools, as well as community and economic development and it reinforced the importance of developing and communicating a vision of who we are and wish to be as a city and then creating a road map with signposts marking the direction and milestones to help us measure our progress.

Mayor Nystrom spoke about strengthening public-private partnerships and collaborations because our collective whole is greater than the sum of each of our individual parts. We need to do, and to think, more “us” and less “them” (because us is them).

The presentation was my first opportunity to hear a new (to me) perspective from our Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Kristen Stringfellow when she spoke of what she called our school's treasures (and realized they belong to all of us): our children, our teachers, our diversity, and our community.  Norwich is a reflection of each of those just as much as they are the embodiment of who we keep telling ourselves we wish to be.

An idea offered by NCDC's Bob Mills on Friday morning I really liked was learning from and dealing with ‘disruption.’ I don’t think he meant loud shouting and pointing but rather, to steal from Albert Einstein realizing, 'we cannot solve our problems with the same thinking used to create them,' because both the tools and the times have evolved and progressed. We need to be mindful of that when choosing those seeking seats on the City Council and Board of Education in six weeks’ time. And vote accordingly.

Channeling Carole Bayer Sager

I strive to go for a walk around my neighborhood (a loosely defined term whose parameters change on a daily basis and my mood) whether I hit the treadmill in the gym or not. One of the constants in all of my walks is a turn around the Chelsea Parade, a minute's walk from my house on the way to Broadway and the Norwich Free Academy.

Warm temperatures returned to our area over the weekend and have lingered but they're too late to reverse the process started by last week's middle Sixties temperatures in the deciduous trees flanking The Parade and across the region.

Like it or not (and I don't; I really don't) the seasons have turned and for all of its beauty and crisp, clean air, Autumn means that Winter is another day closer.

Better, Not Older?

I wrote this exactly a decade ago. Doesn't seem that long when looking back but living through it, well, that's another perspective entirely I suppose. Some things have changed: we no longer own the Forester (traded it for an Impreza), our daughter has our own household now and is always a welcome visitor with us, and the car stolen from her was recovered (with no help from our local police) but was destroyed by the folks who stole it. That should catch you up.

When I wrote this I called it:

With Apologies to John Prine

With my daughter and I currently sharing a car as a result of theft, I get a chance to learn new things, or to re-learn old things (I'm not sure which), as another driver's perspective offers an informed contrast to my own notions.

Two years ago or so, the wind shear noise from the rolled up front windows (actually all the windows are electric, so I'm not sure what the phrase should be, 'zipped up' or 'zoomed up' how about 'powered up'? Now I feel like a Mighty Morphin Power Ranger) was so pronounced that as part of the routine maintenance for the Subaru Forester at whatever mileage it was at, I had the garage see what could be done to quiet the hubbub three feet from my ears.

Their solution, and it seemed to work, was to swap out mirror housings, at my expense of course which was only fair. The vehicle warranty covers reasonable wear and tear not all the minutiae damage that Mr. Persnickety Ears can come up with. Some months ago, it seemed to me, at somewhat elevated speeds (and since you might be connected to the public safety/law enforcement community, let's leave those speeds this side of specified, okay?) that the noise was coming back. Actually, it was back and had even accomplished a mail forwarding request through the USPS, I just didn't want to believe it.

Being my father's son, I had a solution that did not involve anything mechanical--turn up the volume on the CD player and the Sirius Radio receiver. (Should you ever be in need of an acoustic baffle, I'd suggest almost anything by Dropkick Murphys, whose anger, velocity, virtuosity, and sheer exuberance make me feel like I'm doing a hundred miles an hour even when I'm parked in the garage.) As time has gone on and other rattles and noises have been added to the not quite celestial choir, I've been turning the volume up to eleven and beyond.

Michelle, who was behind the wheel for part of the day on Sunday as she ran errands with her Mom, has far keener hearing than her metal-headed father and her years of music instruction and concert performance has made her far more sensitive to road noises. Luckily she has her mother's sense of how things are put together which means far fewer invocations of 'sinister force' as a cause for breakdowns and far more often a 'let's roll up our sleeves and see what the matter is' approach.

She shared with me that much of the noise was caused by a split seal on a 1/32" long piece of rubber gasket that separates the driver's side window from the car frame (Foresters have NO door frames that window glass slides up into. I don't know why) and she speculated a piece of black gasket tape, to close the gap would do the trick in terms of dampening.

We've often been told as she grew up by a variety of music teachers that she has a wonderful sense of pitch (I almost said perfect pitch but I'm not sure how that would work) and it seems that it may have opened up another career path for her should she decide that concert musician isn't the life she wishes, service manager at a car dealership. It's now so quiet in the Forester I can hear myself think. Sadly, the silence is deafening.

Let's Play Charades

Since I often hear from people that much of what I write annoys and angers them, I thought a vacation from words of any kind, if but only for a day, might be a nice idea. And you're welcome in advance.,

You can get this one, it's pretty easy and I think it'll make you smile as well.

Just me, or did I hear the sound of one hand clapping in appreciation?

But That Trick Never Works

More and more of my family have relocated to The Sunshine State, Florida, be it for school, for employment, or for post-employment (retirement) and who can blame them?

All the sunshine you could ever imagine, a wardrobe, if tourism advertising is to be believed that consists of short sleeve shirts and swimsuits. And no snowblowers or snow shovels anywhere in sight.

Good on them, I say (though it's mostly mumbled) because anytime I think of migrating south with the birds and staying there, I come across a story like this:

Woman pulls gator from yoga pants during traffic stop, authorities say

Rocky and Bullwinkle are considering suing for copyright infringement.

Tomorrow Will Be Here in a Moment

Tomorrow marks the last weekend of the summer as Autumn, says my calendar, begins on Monday. The official end may come as a shock, I suspect, to tens of millions of the nation's schoolchildren who've been back at the academic grindstone for weeks now and who are already looking forward to the Thanksgiving break.

Back when I was a wee slip of a lad, summers seemed to go on forever. We used to spring out of bed to better get a head start on doing absolutely nothing until late in the afternoon when, with a little luck, a marathon baseball game would break out on the dirt field up the street from the Girard's house. No one kept score and nobody cared who won or lost. Players would come and go for hours, heading home for lunch and after returning later again for dinner or to go shopping with Mom and then return again hours later sometimes having to be on the other team.

Usually what we did, depending on how good the player returning was might be that he would have to wait to rejoin the game until another player showed up to balance him out. Mid-inning trades were also not unknown. The games went on until the daylight was dying or, more correctly, had died and then Mr. Girard would back his car out of the carport and turn the headlights (high beams) on to wash over the field so we could wrap it finally (until tomorrow when it began again).

We did this for years until someone (I never knew who) bought the lot and built a house on it. We all hated the people who moved in to live there. And, much later, when the house burned down, I felt a twinge of guilt even though I had nothing to do with what happened-the power of wishing and its consequences, I guess.

As I got older the summers got shorter and when our Pat and Mike were smaller it was fun to watch the cycle begin again with them. We're not too many weeks away from the 'leaf peeping' that everyone associates with New England weekends in the fall. But for me, it's already too late. I hate autumn-I can smell the scent of all things dying even before they actually do and I'm left with memories of the summer to get me through the winter into the following spring. Enjoy what you have, while you have it.

"I" Plural Is "We"

I offered this three years ago as we hurtled towards a national election. This local election season the pace is more measured if not halting but the sentiments, I think, bear repeating.

I was teasing with an acquaintance on how very similar, and sometimes too similar small towns everywhere are to one another. Regardless of politics or location, it's often the same movie with a different cast.

Growing up in New Brunswick, New Jersey, in the middle Sixties I was fascinated to read how Washington's army had slipped out of New York City, at the mouth of the Hudson River, under the cover of darkness but fought tooth and nail to hold on to New Brunswick, on the banks of the old Raritan River.

New Brunswick, then, was a lot like Norwich and hundreds of other places you can think of are now. Varying degrees of plywood windows, people mourning long-gone shops and merchants, and a variety of other suburban ills, real and/or imagined. (back then, no opioid plague but lots of other secret sins and vices.)

They are mostly populated by those who chose to stay but didn't (and still don't) always know how to stem the ebb of vitality and by the ghosts of those who departed. They have stories of past glories we, who are not from here, have heard all the years we've lived here and no longer care about. Your Reid & Hughes building is my George Street Playhouse. No rights, no wrongs. Just us at this moment.

Economic development, achieving and sustaining it, will, I hope, be the primary theme as we near November because one of the concerns I have when we look at the small towns so many call home, or here, is how we attempt to return to a point in the past that can never come again, and we make that idealized version of what once was into a definition of what we wish to be.

When I returned to New Brunswick in 1991, where there had been a ghost town, there was now a downtown, full of shops and people. I had returned to my roots but I didn't recognize the tree. That didn't and doesn't make it 'bad', and for my children, who never lived there, and for those whose children grew up there, it's all the town they've ever known.

When the past keeps us from seeing a future, we need to shift the present.
Same is true right here and now.

No one steps into the same river twice because both they and the river have changed. And while it's probably healthy to mourn what we miss, getting stuck in someone else's reverie will not help us get to where we want and need to be however you define tomorrow.

A life without risk is safe, but not much of a life because a life without risk is a life without the joy of reward and who wants that? Innovation, Invigoration, and Invention all begin with "I"-that's probably not a coincidence, but a call to arms.

The Sporting Life

This being retired and all has its moments. In addition to knowing for certain I've awakened every morning by the number of bones that creak and crack as I arise, my wife and I have scads of additional 'us' time (which she's still sorting out in terms of good or bad).

Tonight we get to do stuff that at no point in our nearly forty-two years of marriage might we have ever contemplated much less undertaken. We are becoming Sports Fans. (sort of)

Sigrid and our daughter Michelle are attending Game 1 of the WNBA best of five semifinal playoffs between the Connecticut Sun and the Los Angeles Sparks.

My son, Patrick, and I are at the Saint Patrick's Cathedral of Major League Baseball, Yankee Stadium, as the Bronx Bombers begin their final homestand of the regular season against the Los Angeles Angels (of Anaheim).

I don't know if the Kenny women are taking a peach basket to the game but I'm giving serious thought to bringing my mitt.

Briggs & Stratton Meet Old & In the Way

I have no way of proving this unless I hire a surveyor and my wife thinks that's a waste of money, but I'm pretty sure the yard surrounding our house is much larger, on a magnitude of five to ten times, than it was when we first moved here almost twenty-eight years ago.

It certainly seems that way to me as the guy who attempts to mow it on a regular albeit erratic basis. Age and Cunning quite often best Youth and Idealism but not when it comes to cutting grass.

I say erratic because there's a piece of the side lawn, and it varies from time to time, that I don't quite seem to find while the mower blades are turning and I'm pushing it around. It's only after I'm done, have turned the mower off and am heading back to (or have already headed into) the garage that I see this patch of uncut grass mocking me.

I refuse to acknowledge it and spend the better part of the following week to ten days (depends on the rainfall we have) until I mow again at which time, the renegade patch of grass has moved to someplace else on the property, lying in wait for me.

All the moisture our lawn ever gets is when it rains as I've decided that struggling to water and weed the lawn so that it flourishes and grows more luxuriant, thicker and faster is a fool's game I should not have to play at my age. As long as whatever's out there covers the ground and cuts down on the amount of mud I track into the house, I'm satisfied. More on point so is my wife.

Fescue, Kentucky grass, save your types for the golf course. My standards have gotten so low the grass needs to only be kind of green and I'm happy. I use the lawnmower we inherited from the people from whom we bought the house and I've left it out on the front lawn after I'm done in the hopes that as night falls someone will steal it giving me the perfect excuse to stop mowing, but so far, no joy.

Looking at the calendar I'm starting to do the unthinkable: develop a fondness for winter. Why? You already know the answer: no more mowing (until after the snow melts).

Rolf Harris Never Mentioned Them

I suspect this is a news story that we will NOT be seeing shortly on either Animal Planet or National Geographic. Not that I'm accusing anyone of anything especially since very often my need to NOT know exceeds someone else's desire to tell me.

See how amazing the Internet is?

When you clicked to open this blog entry I bet you'd never even heard of a kaluta much less thought I was perhaps speaking about Mike Kaluta (which I wasn't). And now just look at us! We're no wiser about any of the important things in life (and most of the not so important as well) than we were when we started out but we're making great time.

Wasn't tomorrow wonderful? I, for one, cannot wait to find out.

Not Exactly Once in a Blue Moon

Brace yourself as this doesn't happen every day or, actually, most days but it could be fun: tonight is a full moon on a Friday the 13th.

I don't know if it's magical or mystical and I don't care.
It's my excuse to enjoy a wonderful Nick Drake song and that's more enough for me.

Darkest Day of the Year

I wrote this years ago in an effort to make sense of the unfathomable horror of the darkest day on the calendar in my lifetime. It's been eighteen years since The Hurt that Never Heals and each of us who was alive on 9/11/01 is alone today with memories of what was and what will never be again.

Who we are now is no longer who we were then and that is true even for those of us who were not yet born when the horror happened. Such is the nature, rate, and pace of life and time. Everything is always old and always new, for some. Even today, or perhaps more especially today.

"And the world changed that day, forever some will say; when New York had her heart broke."
