It was years after his death that I discovered I'd misheard the lyrics to Jimi Hendrix's Purple Haze. I'd always thought he was saying ''Excuse me while I kiss this guy.' Technically, it was a mondegreen, as opposed to an evergreen, I guess.
I mention that because there was a time in my life that, on a spring or near-spring day, I'd be sprawled face-up watching the clouds race overhead. I'm sure you did it as well: finding or seeing shapes of familiar objects in the clouds.
I still have difficulty grasping the distances they are from me since my eyes are constantly telling my brain, 'but...I can almost touch them! What are you talking about?' When I was a kid and a grown-up explained all of that, I just assumed they were kidding me, though why they would do that was a mystery. And having to work out the math behind the explanation was the very definition of no fun.
But why are there clouds and where do they come from? Glad one of us asked.
