The Lonely Crowd, by David Riesman, was on the reading list of an Introduction to Sociology course I took in my first semester at Rutgers College over a half century ago. I've spent just about all of my life since then, living it.
I'm friendly with many people but will be the first to concede I have no friends outside my family. I'm not proud of it as it's not an achievement nor am I saddened about it as I feel no loss or absence.
I'm simply not interested enough to engage and/or be engaged with others to that depth and degree. The return, I have concluded after nearly a lifetime, is not worth the investment. So I can't pretend to understand Shoji Morimoto, or more importantly the people who hire him.
Talk about an expedition in uncharted waters. I could watch the clip all day and still never grasp the appeal.
